Are you getting ready to move? Join the crowd. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 11-12% of the population move each year. That’s more than 35 million people! Who would have thought so many people move every year?
Moving can be exciting and fun if you organize the packing and moving. But even so, you might get anxious as moving day approaches. To avoid stress when moving, plan your move in advance as a step-by-step process.
Packing Supplies
Buy packing supplies well in advance so that you can start packing items whenever the mood hits you. Some of the most important items –
Packing paper is great for packing all kinds of items – glasses, plates, and other fragile items. You can also use packing paper to fill empty space in boxes so that items can’t move around during their journey on the truck.
Bubble wrap is perfect when you need to wrap fragile items. And just think of all the fun you can have later popping the bubbles.
Heavy duty boxes are best. Don’t use boxes that are likely to break under the stress of moving.
Packing tape can be used to close your boxes and to reinforce the seams and edges.
Permanent markers should be used to label all boxes on all sides.

Packing
You’ll want to wait as long as possible to do the actual packing. After all, you don’t want to waste time digging through packed boxes for items that you need at a moment’s notice.
However, if you identify items that definitely won’t be needed before moving day, you can get started packing them and wait until the last minute for everything else.
Heavy items like books should go in small boxes, while lightweight items can go in large boxes. When you load them into the truck, be sure to put the heavy boxes on the bottom – even though they’re smaller. Just load several small boxes to make a platform for the lightweight larger boxes.
Don’t mix items from different rooms in one box. Mark the room on all outside surfaces of the box, and make a list of the contents. You can then put boxes into appropriate rooms when you unpack the truck.
NOTE: Moving valuable works of art involves very careful packing. They shouldn’t be wrapped in paper or towels. Always use bubble wrap.
Don’t Pack
When you rent a moving truck or hire a moving company, you will be presented with a blacklist of items that should not be put in the truck. These items include: medications, gardening chemicals, perishables, bottles of alcohol, important documents, cash, valuable jewelry, gasoline, etc.
It’s a good idea to pack important documents and items that will be essential immediately in your new home in a special box that you will transport yourself. You’ll really want to know where your toothbrush and toothpaste is on your first night.
Loading and Unloading the Truck
Load the heaviest items first and place them near the front of the truck. Then work your way to the back of the truck. Be sure to use moving blankets to buffer mirrors and other upright items.
When you unload the truck, take furniture items out first if possible and put them immediately in the room they belong in. It’s the same for boxes – put them immediately in the correct room.
